Why Gummy Eyeball Treats?
Halloween is fun for us humans, but our pups deserve to join in on the eerie excitement, too! However, many spooky treats out there are filled with ingredients that aren't exactly safe for our four-legged friends. That's why I crafted these healthy dog treat recipes using simple, dog-friendly ingredients that won’t scare your vet. Plus, with a creepy eyeball shape, your dog will feel extra festive. It’s like a trick and a treat!
Ingredients that Won’t Make You Howl (In a Bad Way)
Don’t worry – these homemade dog treats for Halloween are made with all dog-safe ingredients. The base? Gelatin! 🐾 I always use a high-quality, dog-safe gelatin for treats like this (here’s the one I swear by), which is great for digestion, joint health, and even keeps your dog's coat looking boo-tiful.
You can get creative with the colors by using natural, dog-friendly liquids like pureed fruits and veggies. Think beet juice for red eyeballs or spinach puree for green ones. The best part? You don’t need a cauldron to brew up these treats, just a few simple ingredients!
Dog-friendly colored liquids or fruit/veggie purees (I used beet juice because it's good for our pups' skin/coats and digestion)
Blueberries (full of fiber and antioxidants)
Unsweetened oat milk
Dog-safe bone or beef broth (I love Brutus as it is specially formulated for dogs)
Syringe or a straw for precise gelatin dispensing
Half-sphere silicone molds (like these!) for the perfect eyeball shape
How to Make Gummy Eyeball Dog Treats in 30 Minutes
Ready to whip up these spooky goodies? Here's how to create your homemade dog treats in less time than it takes to carve a pumpkin:
In a heat-safe bowl, place your beet juice and beef broth. Add 2 1/4 tsp of gelatin and whisk. Let sit 5 minutes to bloom the gelatin.
Add 1/4 c boiling water to the bowl and whisk until smooth.
Using a syringe or a straw w/ your finger on top, place a few drops of the mixture into each mold.
Place 1 blueberry into the center of each mold. Add more of the mixture if needed to surround the blueberry iris. Move molds to the fridge for five minutes or until set.
Put the remaining beet juice mixture in the bowl into the fridge to set. You can slice this up later to use as a base to serve your eyeballs on top of.
Add oat milk to a heat-safe bowl with 4 1/2 tsp gelatin. Whisk to combine and let sit for 5 minutes to bloom the gelatin.
Add 1/2 c bowling water and whisk until smooth.
Using a spoon, ladle the mixture into each mold until full. Return molds to fridge for 10 minutes or until set.
Pop them out of the molds and enjoy!
These treats will last 7-10 days in a covered container in the fridge. You will notice the gelatin breaks down a little over time, so it's best to dole out your ghouly noms sooner rather than later!
Trick or Treat Your Pup
These eyeball treats are a real scream, and because they’re made with simple, nutritious ingredients, you can feel good about giving your dog a special Halloween treat that’s as healthy as it is festive.
